Navigating the Edge of Improvisation and Composition
Founded in 2012 by the visionary Finnish saxophonist and composer Esa Pietilä (winner of the prestigious 2016 Yrjö Award for Jazz Musician of the Year), Liberty Ship is a premier vanguard ensemble that navigates the deep, unpredictable waters of free jazz, contemporary art music, and avant-garde improvisation. Rooted fundamentally in the concept of absolute musical freedom—the liberty to sound, to listen, and to respond—the group has earned a global reputation for pushing creative boundaries and defying traditional genre constraints.
The Sound and Evolution
Liberty Ship’s music is famously described as being as mysterious, adventurous, and unpredictable as the sea. Originally formed as an all-star Finnish quartet featuring some of the country’s most forward-thinking jazz instrumentalists, the group has since evolved into a flexible, project-based international powerhouse.
The ensemble seamlessly shifts across a broad acoustic and electric landscape. In its expanded and modernized forms, the project bridges the gap between modern free jazz and contemporary classical architectures, often augmenting its core line-up with a mix of driving electronics, heavy rock energy, and classical strings. Whether performing a highly structured suite or executing real-time collective improvisations, the “crew” functions as a single, breathing entity driven by deep listening and sharp artistic presence.

Notable Iterations and Present Forms
Liberty Ship operates fluidly depending on the scope of Pietilä’s grand-scale compositions.
The Core Quartet: Historically anchored by heavyweights including pianist Aki Rissanen / Håvard Wiik, bassists Antti Lötjönen / Ole Morten Vågan, and powerhouse drummer Olavi Louhivuori.
The Expanded Ensemble: For monumental, meditative events—such as their major feature at the April Jazz Festival—Pietilä expands the vessel into a massive septet configuration. This setup brings in the raw, rock-infused energy of avant-garde guitarist Raoul Björkenheim alongside classical string textures from Max Savikangas (viola) and Iida-Wilhelmiina Sinivalo (cello).
Led by Pietilä as both its conductor and solo navigator, Liberty Ship remains a vital, shape-shifting vehicle for essential, boundary-breaking art.
